 In the fifth century, Britain has been abandoned by the Roman empire. Threatened by raiders along its coasts, an army massing in the north, increasing numbers of migrants, self-interest and civil war, Britannia is disintegrating. Vortigern is given the task of saving the province.

A Man of Heart is the second part of A Presentment of Englishry. It continues to follow the narrative trajectory of Laȝamon's Brut, a late 12^th century version of the legendary history, the foundation myth of Britain.
